Born and brought up in the Island of Lewis from an early age all my free time was spent all around boats, my father was one of the directors of Stornoway Boat building and Chairman of Stornoway Pier and Harbour Commission, so from knee high I was immersed into the world of boats, boat building and maintenance. One of the favourite playgrounds of my youth was the slip and workshops of Goat Island. We spent our summers in Uig with the family boats, keeping our boat in Carnish, Miavig and Carishader and a few years at the slip at Mealasta at the far end of Uig. Fishing was the order of the day with great catches of Lobster, crab and whitefish. Even now I still keep a boat in Uig, Miavig and spent many days fishing our usual “marks” in West Loch Roag last year.
I’ve never been without a boat all my life, (I currently own 4 fibreglass boats) there is always maintenance and repair to be done, I have overhauled and repaired many boats over the years for friends and clubs etc the idea for MG Marine came from friends and colleagues who told me that this is what I should be doing, aged 50 now I hope in the future to pass on the many skills I have learned over the years.
I am married to Rachel who is a nurse in the Surgical Ward of the Western Isles Hospital and we have two sons Finlay 14 and John 7.
At the age of twenty I started my Sea going career as DHU, EDH, AB and got my first Bosun position aged 25 , I spent many years serving on Large Vessels in the North Sea and Worldwide, working mainly in the Offshore Oil Industry, Straight Supply Vessels, ROV, Construction, Anchor handling in depths of up to 2000mtrs, Pipe Hauling, Rig shifts, Towage etc, I worked in the Uk , America, India, South Africa, Brazil, Malaysia, Falklands as well as the Baltic States and all the European countries, working with Crews of up to 50 seamen of all nationalities as Bosun, my last vessel was engaged in Pipe Hauling out of Alexandria in Egypt running pipe into Cyprus in the Mediterranean. My career spanned thirty years of continuous employment in the Merchant Navy. Maintaining and running the decks of these vessels in all weathers was a constant challenge which I always enjoyed.
